Dallas Thunderbolts 2012 count?

Sun Nov 25, 2012 3:21 pm

I am happy to report that the T-bolt at Hillcrest High School is still standing proud; not (yet) removed as of last night (11/24/12). I haven't had a chance to check out any other possible remaining sites yet, but I'll try to do so during this coming week. I was pleasantly surprised to see that one, as I was of the understanding that all of them were to be removed circa 2009-10.

Any others recently verified?

Charles
Yes, that's a real 500-lb Federal SD-10 I'm holding (braggart!)

Most of them are still there. I don't think they are going anywhere anytime soon as Dallas doesn't have the money to remove them. After a recent converstation with the EM director, they are abandoning them in place. With the exeption of a few that are on private property and that interfere with construction.

One thing I find odd about the Thunderbolt near Mockingbird and I-35 is that the horn has changed directions recently. Same for the one at Cadiz and South Akard Street. Perhaps it is just strong winds?

Yeah. Last I talked to them they had no plans to remove them.

Are you saying the EM director actually said they were "abandoning them in place?"
I can't imagine that they won't remain city property? Abandonded in place is what happened with fallout shelter supplies. That pretty much meant that the govt. didn't give a flip and the stuff was up for grabs. Seems hard to believe that's the case with those Dallas sirens.

They are still city property, they are just not going to do anything with them in the near future.

Are the Thunderbolts even still active? I know of several locations where essentially there is a Thunderbolt right next to a 2001. If the Tbolt's are still active, that would make for one interesting recording.

If I am not mistaken, they were decommissioned in 2008/2009

All of the Thunderbolts are dead. I even asked the EM director if they could manually set one of them off with the rest of the 2001s so I could get a recording, but he refused.

We're going to be at the Cooper Clinic today, then leaving tomorrow, but likely will be back for a couple more weeks soon. I'd like to catch the test a week from Wednesday, but that doesn't work with our schedule  . We got cheated when they took out the T-Bolt at fire sta. 10, as now our nearest siren is the one in the median of Frankford east of the Tollway. But my in-laws got a 2001 about 500 feet from their house! (Preston/Forest).

There are 2 that I know of still standing. Ones is at a fire station at Buckner Blvd, & Garland Rd. and the other is at a fire station on Northwest Hwy. just west of Plano Rd.
