Should I Contact The EMA?

Tue Jun 25, 2013 7:04 pm

The tornado siren at Grove City High School (the WPS-3016) has been shaking on the pole a lot lately. I walked up to the siren lately, and I noticed that the mounting bracket looked bent and the siren was shaking on the pole back and forth, and the wood pole was bending almost as if it were rotting.

I actually thought the siren head might fall off when I was watching! Should I tell the Franklin EMA about this, or shouldn't I?

Depends. If your EMA cares for their sirens a lot (I email my fire chief about problems i see with sirens and/or then not sounding off and he's usually already aware of it and are trying to fix it.) then you probably shouldn't because they might already know. f not, then go for it.

You could try and contact the EMA, but it probably won't spur them to do a whole lot. I think what you're describing is a consistant issue with the 3016s due to the fact that their design makes them a giant wind catch. I think it was either Plano or McKinney, Tx that had some 3016s which ended up having the siren heads snap off the poles during some high wind events the only thing that was left was the rotator and mounting bracket.

I think you are referencing the pole shrinkage that occurs with wooden poles. Good news is as long as the bolts are through the pole, it ain't going anywhere. It sorta can't be fixed without replacing the whole pole or just adding in some wooden blocks to the bracket.

If it's the one at the high school then there is already a video of it on YouTube. Can't search for it on my phone so if someone could reply to it here that'd be awesome. It's fairly new with a 560 Hz panel.

When was this? I don't remember them having 3016s, only the 4008s. Then again, I haven't lived in this area for too long either.

If you really want them to listen, say that it could fall off and kill or injure someone and they could sue. I'm not saying for you to do that, but that usually gets them on their toes.
Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right.
