State of Hawaii Getting a Statewide System Upgrade

Sun Jun 30, 2013 9:21 pm

The state of Hawaii will be doing a statewide upgrade on its Civil Defense tsunami warning sirens by the end of this year. Many of the old sirens are becoming unreliable, so a two-way reporting system and different activation ways are being installed.

Yep. They've been moving to satellite activation. They've been sticking UV boxes on everything they can, including the new i-Forces that they have (ex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4mmSNMLXX8). I *think* the mechanicals are on their way out, too (though don't quote me on that).

Besides the mechanical sirens, who old are those EOWS, DSA, Mods, I-force, and Horman arrays?
And if they do plan on replacing the mechanical sirens, what are the chances of seeing some Modulator II sirens being installed?

Well, if they install a Modulator at all from now on, it will be a Modulator II, since the Modulator is no longer on FS's production list, so I assume it is no longer available.

I'm not sure about the Hormann arrays or the i-Forces, but I'm thinking the EOWS anywhere from early-80s to mid-90s and the DSAs and MODs from early-to-mid 90s to present.

Since it appears they are switching over to UVs then, it would be cool if one could possibly obtain an MCP that they would use on those older DSAs, MODs, and EOWS.

I'm not surprised to see this.. they had some really rough looking 2t22s and Thunderbolts along with those EOWS sirens that are ugly looking too. At least they're getting the upgrades. I'm curious to see how this satellite activation thing goes it sounds nice at least.

They've been working on it for a while now. The first I had heard about it was when I read this: http://www.omaha.com/article/20120615/NEWS01/120619803/

I live in Hawaii and for the past year, all electronic sirens are getting upgraded with the federal Ultravoice. The older sirens like thunderbolts and STL-10's are getting their controllers replaced to. each siren has 3 antennas: radio, cellular, and satellite. Unfortunately the thunderbolts are being replaced because the salt air is literally eating them alive to the point where holes are being formed in the horns, rotator box, and blower housing. And to answer a lingering question,---YES! WE WiLL BE GETTING MODULATOR 2'S!!!!!!!--- THERE ARE ALSO AROUND 40 TO 50 HORMANN SIRENS ON OAHU
