Found a Denver Siren

Mon Sep 09, 2013 9:16 pm

I was driving through the Yakima Valley of southeast Washington and saw at a distance a Model 2 on an old water tower in Toppenish. As I got closer, I saw this Denver below it. These things are huge!
I only had my phone so I can't get a better photo, and I don't know whether it is still in use.

Nice find!
Ripe old age of 26. I'm quite fond of alcohol and telephone relays.

Yikes, what is it with Model 2s on water towers? I just found one in Kimberly, Idaho yesterday.

Towns must seem to like them. I know of about 10 within an hour of me.

The tower sits next to a busy intersection which curves around it, and behind the tower is a fenced-in area and railroad tracks, so it is hard to photograph. I would have to bring a real camera and possibly get out of my car to get a good image. There is a fire station a block away, and the wiring appears intact. There is a yellow box behind the Model 2 which has wires running to both sirens.

I wish I could see the face of the rotor so I could put a date to the siren. From what I've found, 1915-early 1916 models have 20 blades matching the port count, and models mid to late 1916-1918 have only 5.
