Minneapolis Siren Project

Thu Sep 26, 2013 5:46 pm

Hello, Everyone

Minneapolis will be replace their current 31 siren system with Whelen Vortexs starting this October. The bid called for 12 additonal siren for more coverage to the population grow in the city and bring the system 43 sirens. The city going with vortex will mean the 2001s and thunderbolts will be coming down. The majority of the sirens will poled mounted in new locations while a few go back top of buildings that the city owns.

Boy I tell you what...I think Minneapolis will be quite satisfied with their Vortexes. Sure they won't be mistaken for a 'Bolt, but I can assure you that 560 hz tone carries like nothing I've heard before. I live about a half mile from the closest 2910, and you'd think it was next door when it goes off (and even though voice intelligibility isn't a factor with the Vortex, I can also say that voice is crystal clear at a half mile away). I can even hear 2910s 3 miles away shutting off during tests....this is urban, dense St. Louis County.

No 2001 is going to carry like those Vortexes will.

I did not see this coming. What are they going to do with their 2001's? Most of them have battery backup and could sitll be used somewhere, I hope they can sell them or something. Well, this will be interesting. I am going to have to look for Whelens now. Lovely.

The installer of the new system will do something the 2001's and only one 2001 in the system is battery backup.

I'm beginning to be impressed by those Vortexes. If they could perfect the battery back-up feature, they will become leaders in the electronic siren industry. Screw Federal.

Would you care to elaborate on that and where you've come up with the conclusion there's a problem? Whelen doesn't have any major battery back-up issues so far as I am aware and I would argue they are the leaders in the electronic siren industry.
