What about the origonal cost of some older sirens?

FS 500
ACA P10-15
ACA CYCLONE
ACA ALLERTOR

i am absolutely clueless on what these cost!

most new sirens today (mechanical) are starting around 20 - 25 K installed. Depends on the dealer and the options you want...

When Upson County, GA purchased Thunderbolts back in 1961, they were around $3000-$4000 each. I think the local power company installed them.

The actual list price from the manufacturer is something that they don't want published on a public discussion board. But you can look at bid tabulations and see the final turnkey installed price.

20-25? really? that seems like its much more than it should be. Now, the T-bolts is more reasonable even with inflation factored in.

Nope. Let's do some math.

According to the inflation calculator at the Bureau of Labor Statistics,

$3000 in 1961 = $23,465.92 in 2013
$4000 in 1961 = $31,287.89 in 2013.

So $20-$25k for a siren in 2013 is decently comparable to a T-Bolt in 1961 (and may even be a bit cheaper comparatively). I thought some of the beefier mechanicals were closer to $30k as is.

As for your original question:

I want to echo this. You'd be surprised what becomes public record on the web if you search long enough.

That sounds about right. The Thunderbolt was a very expensive siren.

If only Federal Signal would use their common sense and redesign certain parts of the Thunderbolt, I think they could make it much more efficient and use less parts. If they could come up with an ACA Hurricane style direct-drive blower using like a high speed low voltage DC motor, I'm sure they could make them better than any 2001! Maybe redesign other areas too, but I'm just thinking.

It doesn't matter, that blower itself is EXPENSIVE.

They already have a great siren design, it's called the 508.

I just wish come counties would sell sirens to people who resore them then the people sell them back to the county for 3-6000. It would be cheaper for the county and they would have a better siren.

The Thunderbolt is gone and never coming back. Why is this such a hard concept for people? They're maintenance hogs.a It has been made efficient using less parts. Its called the 2001 and 508. The need for the blower has been eliminated by better horn, rotor, and stator designs on newer sirens. And if you dissect the 2001, 508, T-128, etc., they're all marvelously designed and engineered to get that sound output up (remember: if you're attached to history, ACA was making high power designs by using intelligently designed horns and veined rotors/stators from its inception...those Allertors and Penetrators are beasts!). Best of all, the newer designs allow for appropriately sized DC motors for battery back-up (remember, ASC was able to get a siren to perform better in field tests than the P-50 and it can run on 6 batteries...again, old isn't necessarily better). Ain't no reasonable way to back a DC T-Bolt up that if you start throwing multiple motors into a redesigned unit.

Preach it, bro!
