Can someone make 3d printer files for rotors and stators?

Tue Oct 08, 2013 9:39 pm

I found out that a teacher at my school has a 3D printer, and I can use it for $4 a cubic inch, but I'm a total noob with 3d modelling programs like sketchup. If someone here is good with that, you should make siren rotors and stators, and upload the files so everyone here could print their own. I think the best thing would be stacked rotors and stators to make a 10/12 ratio

Siren parts should get very interesting in the coming years with 3D printing, but I don't think the current media is able to withstand the forces acted upon a rotor just yet. It will come soon though, and it's very exciting!

Oh really?

On topic: The biggest trouble with 3D printing a working siren is rotor balance. The rotor will NEVER print perfectly balanced. If you use a rotor fresh from the printer, expect plastic fragments kinda... here... there... everywhere. 3D printing a siren really isn't practical.

Oh Gosh darnit, my three-year free trial of AutoCAD just expired last month, I could have easily cooked something up for you!

In that video, is it running backwards?

I would have carved siren parts out of wood, but my dad has to find all the tools buried in the garage, and it's a pain in the rear, really

Also, I found this youtube video where the rotor and stator were really far apart, like 1 inch, and it still sounded decent. So sirens aren't that finicky

It is running the opposite way of how it was designed, yes.

The closer the rotor and stator, the less room for rotor imperfections; however, the sound produced will become sharper and louder as the clearance gets smaller. Generally, a rotor/stator gap less than 1/4 inch is the best, though if you can get closer- do it.

Sirens only get finicky when their rotors become off-balance. When things get off-balance, the whole siren shakes, the motor is put under great stress, the armature of the motor may bend, and the rotor may even explode in certain situations. That's why I'm talking about balance so much, it is very important.
