Siren Photos from Another Trip

Fri Nov 21, 2014 2:03 am

Hello, I took a trip to Chattanooga, TN on November 15 to November 16 to camp in a cave with the boyscouts (I'm actually a boyscout, just letting you). I stop by a few places to shot photos of a few sirens. It took me a while to post this.

Anyway, here are the photos:

^First stop is the Whelen Hornet. There was a Model 2 mounted on top of the (former) Rasaca fire department but it was removed. This Whelen Hornet is located in Rasaca, GA at (former) Rasaca fire department.

^Second stop is the Federal Signal 508 (replaced a Thunderbolt 1000B-SC) [first 508 I ever seen! :)] located in Ooltewah, TN next to Miller Industries off of Hilltop drive next to interstate 75.

^Since there was another 508 (this one) not that far from the first 508, I decided to shot photos of this one. This 508 is located on Mountain View Rd next to interstate 75.

^Last stop is the Thunderbolt 1000/1000T (I believe it's a 1000T) located in downtown Chattanooga, TN on top of Mary Walker Towers. This Thunderbolt is not in service. The weather was nasty when I shot photos of the Thunderbolt. (I know that Chattanooga has a second Thunderbolt, I was unable to stop by to shot photos of it.)

That's all!

Good pictues; that Thunderbolt looks to be in bad shape. Not that it matters, since it's decommissioned anyway.

Aside from the surface rust, it seems pretty solid to me. I bet it would fire right up if needed.

Are the 508s used for weather warnings or something else?

The 508s are part of a nuclear power plant siren system. I'm not sure if they are used for tornado warnings though.

I wonder if the Denver siren they had still exists? If it does I've never been able to find it but a member here knew where it was.
