The Vogtle plant

Fri Feb 27, 2015 2:07 am

As we all know, (I hope at least some of know) that Georgia has seen a new nuclear power plant go up, the first one to be accepted by the NRC in over 30 years, which is actually quite nice, since nuclear power is a pretty good energy source in my opinion.

I was wondering if anyone has caught a test, or heard a test of their siren system. They use Whelen WPS 3016's.

There are 48 sirens in the system, 47 WPS 3016s and 1 WPS 2020. According to a post by Ian, they were dual toned before being upgraded to new controls some time ago.

There's actually 48 sirens in Vogtle's warning system, not 29. Here's a map of the system I made a while back: http://goo.gl/maps/WXvYr

From what I could hear during one of their tests back about 10 years ago or so, the whole system originally had all dual toned ESC-864 controllers, but they've since upgraded all of them sometime in the early/mid-2000s per NRC regulations. I think the upgraded controllers have the 440Hz alert tone, but I haven't been up there since the upgrade to hear any of them.

It's not a DSA, it's a Whelen WPS-2020. Their entire system is all older Whelens, mostly 3016s with this one 2020 at the plant itself.
