MN state wide siren test, March 4

Wed Mar 04, 2015 5:01 pm

Today at 1pm central time is the MN siren test.

I will be in 5th hour at that time, I won't be able to hear the local enlarged rotating fire truck siren on a pole (also known as a 2001-130) that is 500ft away from the school because I'm in a interior room of the school.

MN tests the sirens monthly on 1st Wednesday of month at 1pm

Well... Maybe for some people, I'm just a little mad that I won't be able to hear it.

Wrong! Statewide test isn't until April for Minnesota.

The one here in Minnesota appears to be pushed by the Twin Cities NWS, so I would maybe check with each state's weather service. Here it is part of Severe Weather Awareness Week.

Well don't they test the siren system in Minnesota every month on the first Wednesday at 1pm? They have been doing this in my county (Hennepin) they have been testing the sirens EVERY month at this time for as long as I can remember, my mom told me this test was state wide but maybe she was wrong. I heard about the tornado drill day in April but I'm not talking about a drill, I'm talking about the monthly siren test.

Monthly testing times in the state of Minnesota vary depending on the county. My thinking is that the "first Wednesday of the month at 1:00 PM" schedule was just what most counties originally followed, as I remember Olmsted County testing their system at that time for many years up until the mid-late 1990s when it changed to 10:00 AM every first Wednesday, then changed again to a full 3 minute alert test the first Wednesday, and growl/rotation tests every other Wednesday.
