Hackjob Horror Stories. Botched siren replacements and repairs

Mon May 25, 2015 2:50 am

Today, I found something that absolutely inspired me to make a new thread, in which I ask:

What is the most obstinate siren hackjob you know about?

What prompted this? This very Allertor in Fargo,OK:
https://www.google.com/maps/@36.375144, ... LgmBHw!2e0

This is an amazing piece of work, basically replacing the giant flared intake cone with one meant to protect pipes on houses. Also I can't help but notice the downed Thunderbolt next to it; with pipes still attached to the blower box (Which are now routed inside the building, for pressurized air?), I can only assume this Allertor hackjob is a replacement for the Thunderbolt, and that leaves me very perplexed indeed.

This Allertor is actually a Mobil Directo. Cory has taken photos of it and it has the heavy looking steel screen inside it. The Thunderbolt is more recent, probably from Woodward's upgrade a few years ago seeing that it's a C series. They were supposed to be installing it in another part of town but evidently that hasn't happened yet. Also the blower is screwed, the pipe is just sticking up open.
Kicking it in the siren party since '08

Hah, fun story. That siren was swaying in the wind really bad due to the city not installing the correct size footing and was about to fall over. The city hired a crane company to come out and hold the siren up until they could fix the little itty bitty concrete footing that they put on it which was not deep enough to hold the weight of the siren. Long story short the crane guy needed his truck back and left with the truck. Not too long after that there was a gust of wind and the whole siren and pole fell down and bent the pole and destroyed the siren. (That is what i remember happened, if i got any of it wrong, feel free to correct me)

I always liked this one, but unfortunately the pictures are gone. Perhaps Eric can reupload them? https://airraidsirens.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9300

Anyway, it's a Thunderbolt with the motor from a submersible well pump strapped on top to drive the chopper through the cap. It has since been fixed.

I'm pretty sure those ACA/Thunderbolt abominations are the reason why aliens never visit us.

Would Model x's with missing shrouds be good contenders for this thread? If so, then I have a good example of that.
