2001 Siren Series Differences?

Thu Jul 23, 2015 7:34 am

So I've heard that there's a LOT of sirens in the 2001 series and I have some questions:

What is the difference between them all?

From the 2001 AC/DC to the 2001-130, I have not really noticed much in
difference between them (excluding the equinox).

Which one came first? 2001 AC or 2001 DC? Or did they come out together?

How come the equinox is lower pitched? All of the other 2001's are SERIOUSLY
high pitched, so why did they change it?

Thanks

The 2001 DC/AC Siren has a 'blockier' intake cone with the screen, the 2001-SRN/SRNB siren has a 'smoother' intake cone, and the 2001-130 has a taller rotator box. Besides the control boxes, I don't think there is any visual difference between the 2001-DC and the 2001-AC.

EDIT: I thought that I should tell you that the 2001 uses a Model 3 chopper.

Sorry if I got any information wrong, I'm tired

The Equinox was the bridge from the 2001 to the 508- the 508's prototype, if you will. A customer wanted a lower-pitched version of the 2001, and they came up with the Equinox to fill the bid. Through a long series of steps, the Equinox led to the 508. Now, it's a cheaper alternative to the 508 for people who want the low tone without the big hole in the pocket.

I believe we've been through this many times now, and decided that 2001-AC and 2001-DC only refer to the controls, depending on whether the siren includes batteries(DC) or not(AC).

First was the 2001-SRN, which are all of the 2001s with a rectangular rotator box, although some of the earlier ones are labeled 2001-DC on the rotator box just indicating that it has a DC motor.

Then came the 2001-SRNB, and the 2001-130 which have all been described in earlier posts.

The rounded back ones are 2001-SRNs as well. There is a picture of the tag floating around somewhere. They were all also labeled as 2001-DC on the heads regardless of the sirens' controls being AC/DC, DC, or AC. It may have been because the sirens had DC motors in them, but I don't think anyone really knows the story behind it.

The Equinox is an 8 port siren like a T-128, T-135, etc. while the rest of the 2001s are 12 port like a STH-10 or the majority of Model 5s out there. More ports gives a higher pitch. Even with the siren being physically quieter than a 2001-130 it's able to get close to the same range because of the lower pitch.

Thanks everyone for your answers

Also, What is the difference between the 508 and Equinox? I've heard the 508 has 2 seperate motors - does that
change anything? (Sorry, I'm not that technical with siren parts etc.)

The Equinox is an 8-port 2001. There are two motors on both the 2001 and 508, one for the rotor and one the rotator. The 508 uses the same rotor/stator assembly that an Eclipse-8 does(which also happens to be the same design that ASC uses for their sirens). The 508 has a completely different projector design, the rest of it is a slightly modified 2001.
Down to a Thunderbolt chopper, still a few goofy flashlight-siren combos, and a Model L.
