Chrysler Air Raid Siren – Alert Signal Capability

Thu Sep 03, 2015 3:22 am

I realize the CARS ( )is capable of producing the Attack Signal, but is the siren capable of producing the Alert Signal? From all the sources I have checked it mentions the Warning, Warbling (Attack) Signal never the Alert, Steady Signal.

Well, it was operated with a clutch, pretty much like accelerating in a car. So the operator could have held the handle perfectly still for an alert signal, until his-her hand cramped.
Down to a Thunderbolt chopper, still a few goofy flashlight-siren combos, and a Model L.

Seems a Chrysler would have that Alert Capability since the All Clear Signal was a steady tone. Jackson, MI had a Chrysler (wasn't working when I moved here, eventually replaced with a T-bolt) on the Court House. The old Emergency Operations Manual back in that time listed 3 signals Alert, Attack and All Clear. Test days back then with the other sirens in town were always Alert and Attack so I am pretty sure the Chrysler could have done the same.

Most of them were operated automatically, so there must have been an electric clutch which received the timing signal.

...To achieve the warbling (attack) signal the seated operator (on the earlier units) would have used the throttle to increase and decrease the R.P.Ms and not engage/disengage the clutch...that Hemi engine would have cooked that clutch had the operator been doing that....I would imagine that possibly a signal controlled solenoid of some sort could have been retro fitted on the sirens later on when they became activated from a remote location to run the throttle up and down for the attack signal.

For an example, take a look at the " Big Daddy" Don Garlits video taken at his shop with his Chrysler siren and watch him run the throttle.
