4004 or Vortex?

Thu Dec 03, 2015 6:24 pm

In Mount Pleasant Michigan we have a system of seemingly Vortexes and Hornets. However, upon closer inspection of one of the "Vortexes", it would seem that is has the circular rotator protrusion, similar to that of the older 4004s. Also, underneath it weilds a Type II control box, apparent by the separation between the top and bottom of the box. So you could just conclude this to be a 4004, right? However, the Siren head does not have the rectangular protrusions on each side of the projector horn, nor does it have an X across the screen, typical of a 4004. Sirens don't ever do voice either. What is it?! I will take pictures after class.

The way you're describing it, it sounds like a 4004, or anything in the 4000 series.
Resident of a county with big a mixture of sirens, but in the process of being replaced. :(

That is what I am thinking. Why would they buy 4004s and not use voice then? Seems like a waste of money (if they are 4004s).

I feel like sometimes, in situations like this, it's a matter of immediate availability from vendors, but I could be wrong. Denver, Colorado had a couple of Thunderbolt 1003s and obviously, they never had any reason to use high-low or pulsed.

Here you can see that the bottom 1/4 section is "separated" from the top 3/4 of the box. Type II control box?

Here you can faintly see the circular rotator.

That's the thing though, I'm not even 100% sure these are 4004s though.

One possibility is that the dealer might've only had those 1003's to sell.
In my opinion, I think there way too many 2001's in Indiana!

The dealers don't stock sirens. They are made to order by the factory.

Could these be 4004 controls and rotator mechanisms, with Vortex heads? That probably doesn't even make any sense. Don't 4004s typically have a rectangular embossment on each side of the projector horn, whereas Vortex heads don't?

Whatever they are, they just went off 20 minutes ago. I was in the middle of campus about a quarter mile away from the nearest Siren and I've got to say that was the loudest thing I've ever heard in my entire life!
