Frankfort Trip Siren Hunt 6-6-16

Tue Jun 07, 2016 6:12 pm

Michael, August, and I went down to Frankfort to catch a 5/6 Thunderbolt for their first Monday of the month test. On the way down, in, and on the way out of Frankfort we saw some sirens. Here they are:

Federal Signal 508, Providence Baptist Church, Frankfort, KY
On our way in to Frankfort, along Georgetown Road, Michael spotted this brand new 508. The county is installing these all over the place, and they are somewhat replacements. Basically, the sirens cover most of the old sirens' radii, but the old sirens will be kept active until they cease to function.

Federal Signal Model 2, Oak Street and Capitol Avenue, Frankfort, KY
This Model 2 is located in a mobile home park off of Georgetown Road, and boy does it look fresh. I have a suspicion that there was at one point an older Model 2, or even 2T here.

Federal Signal STH-10, Buck Run Baptist Church, Frankfort, KY
We decided to also stop at this rusty STH-10 on the way in. It's located in some trees by a small outbuilding near Elkhorn Creek.

King's Daughters Apartments Thunderbolt from afar, Frankfort, KY
We stopped in at the Frankfort Cemetery to see Daniel Boone's grave, and from said grave you could spot the King's Daughters Apartments Thunderbolt. Better pictures coning up in a bit.

Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1000T, Thorn Hill Learning Center, Frankfort, KY
This is the Thunderbolt we chose to record, and you can see why with it's unique and relatively low mount.

Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1000T, King's Daughters Apartments, Frankfort, KY
Like I promised, here are better pictures of the King's Daughters Apartment Thunderbolt. We were kindly informed by the folks inside that this siren was struck by lightning about a year ago and has not been active since. At this point, I'm doubting it will be brought back in to service.

Kudos to August on finding this one! He remembered seeing an SD-10 on a tower in Frankfort long ago, and sure enough, here it is. Note the circle F logo!

Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1000T and distant 508, Juniper Hills Golf Course/Park, Frankfort, KY
We went up to Juniper Hills to see their 1000T, and spotted a nearby 508 on Browns Ferry Road. Both are active.

Federal Signal 2001-130 and Darley Champion, Buffalo Trace Distillery, Frankfort, KY
We stopped by to see this 2001-130 that's completely blackened. A plant worker told us that it's a type of mold that thrives on objects at the distillery due the the ethanol concentration in the air. We also spotted a Darley Champion on the water tower, also covered in the mold.

Federal Signal 2001-SRNB, mystery siren, and loudspeakers, Stamping Ground Fire Department, Stamping Ground, KY
On the way home we passed through Stamping Ground, Kentucky to see the sirens at their fire department. What I originally thought was a Whelen WS-1000 on Google Earth turned out to be a set of loudspeakers to warn of firetrucks pulling out. We did, however see a horizontal siren in a cage underneath it, which appears to be some sort of Sterling or Federal or something. And then of course there's the SRNB.

Great pictures! It almost looks like a Chrystler or some type of large siren was mounted atop that tower once. I also find it neat that they will keep the old sirens functioning until they can't be used anymore.

Nice hunt! I have a hunch that the mystery siren is a Federal Model B.

Who was Daniel Boone?
I own: One complete SiraTone, another SiraTone control module, a 1600W MC, 2 old ATI controllers, 2 round ATI horns with drivers, a ATI-DSA 4 thing, a Federal Signal FC, AR timer and Siratrol, and a small CD&F.

Great pictures! I am really liking that SD-10 with the old circle F logo on it. As for the mystery siren, it looks to be a Federal type B without the end projectors.

Boy that 2001 and champion are covered... Is it a good idea to wash sirens?

I personally think that the mystery siren may be a MARS siren. I'm not sure though.
