Chicago Siren History/Documentary Project

Thu Sep 15, 2016 6:38 am

Greetings all!

For a few months now, several friends and I have been researching and logging data about Chicago's Siren systems from WWII to today. There's a bit of information out there that has come about in the past few years, but no one has compiled everything for a difinitive and clear look at what Chicago's sirens were like and what all went on with them.

I'm glad to finally share the first episode of my short documentary series with everyone. A lot of info comes from Chicago Tribune articles that have been archived online. I'd like to thank those who have contributed to it, as well. For the first part of my Microseries, I focused on World War 2 and the Chicago Civil Defense Corps' efforts on alerting civilians to danger! As this thread expands, I will also be showing photos and other cool stuff I have around here on the subject for everyone to see. When the Cold War episode is finished later on, I will include a map featuring both 1942 & 1958 siren locations in the city. This episode will feature a celebrity guest voice, as well.
