Sentry 10V Rural Ambience (2.5 Miles) in Berkeley Springs, WV

Sun Jun 23, 2019 5:40 am

It had been almost 2 years since the last time I heard the particular Sentry 10V siren that's in my profile picture, but I finally heard its eerie, beautiful tone again tonight at a party in Unger, WV. I wasn't expecting it to go off and stepped out from the party to record, so unfortunately there's a bit of party noise in the background, but if you turn your volume up you can hear the siren clearly. I took video for almost the full 3 minutes that it ran (it does nine 20-second cycles), but the background noise got worse after the first minute so I just cut that out of the video and focused on three cycles.

That eerie sound... that’s why I love 8 port sirens that have the pitch between 475 Hz - 500 Hz. If I were to set off any siren, I would choose that 10V.

As I say in the video's description on YouTube - when I lived near this siren as a child (about the same distance from which this video was taken), I had some freaky moments with it. Once I was laying in bed unable to sleep and it went off, once I woke up at 3 am and it was going off, etc. I remember the feeling of the chill that went up my spine each time I heard the very fast windup. That sound was distant, but it penetrated and reverberated in the house. When it wasn't the middle of the night, I always admired how elegant the sound was, at least compared to the gruff-sounding 8/16 Sterling at the town center. And, being a musician, the near-perfect concert B♭ is a satisfying sound, since it's what we tune to in wind symphony.
