Federal Enterprises 50-Horsepower siren

Tue Nov 03, 2020 7:44 am

Discovered this last night. It was installed in Indianapolis in 1952. There's one still remaining in Vestal NY.

Wait, that's actually super cool. Do you know the DB rating, and if the unit in Vestal is still active?

Edit: It is not active, it is on display.. but the department has a Model 5/7

This is a major find. I assumed this was a hor/sterling for some time. Could be a predecessor to the 550s.
I'm Jacob Ulrich or MidMissouriSirens on youtube.

I thought so too, and that's my guess as well.

What is the voltage of the motor? I assume 480...

Think about this.

We just discovered a new siren not previously known to exist that was erected nearly 70 years ago.

Why would we know something so specific as the motor voltage and, frankly, why does it matter.

I can't see a visible rotator on it, so I don't think it rotates.

I don't think the stators can get past the platforms.

If look in photo 2 you can see that the platform that holds the motor is not fully attached to the base making me think the rotor is inside the base (also why would you use that big of a base and have noting in it)
