Federal Signal 2001 and Equinox chopper compatibility

Tue Apr 05, 2022 11:55 pm

Since the Federal Signal 2001-130 and Equinox are very heavily related, would it be possible to use the chopper off a 2001-130 in an Equinox and vice-versa? Would there be any performance penalties? Would we end up with a siren that sounds mildly 8/12 port?

The Equinox uses the Eclipse's rotor and an 8 port version of the 130's stator, and the rotor in the 130 is from the Model 5. If I'm not mistaken the Eclipse rotor is an inch bigger than the 130's, something along the lines of 16 inches vs 15 inches, so physically it's impossible to swap the rotors or stators. If you could swap them around the port count on the rotor would determine the pitch since it's the thing that's actually moving and chopping the air. An 8 port rotor in a 12 port stator would sound like an 8 port siren and vice versa. You can't get an 8/12 port sound from them unless you mount the Equinox and 130 heads together like the 550-DHTT.

There are a few videos of "5/6" port Model 2s out there with single tone 5 port stators and 5/6 port rotors from a Thunderbolt. The 6 port side of the rotor is pretty audible albeit not quite as old as the 5 port side since the 6 ports on the rotor aren't opening and closing in sync like the 5 port side.
