What siren motor do I use for a 3d printed siren?

Wed Jun 26, 2024 12:03 pm

I think I'm going to 3d print a generic siren but I don't know much about motors or wiring so I don't know what motor to use that's probably under $100 because I have no moneys.

A low budget option are shaded pole motors, you can find them on ebay and many other places for cheap. You can find them in bathroom vent fans as well. Hope this helps!

The shaded pole motor can also be found in box fans and stand fans. For a very small siren, small DC motors are also a good option. They are very cheap, have a good lifetime, and are also found in a ton of small toys and electronics.

For wiring, DC usually uses a red wire for positive and a black wire for negative. DC motors can be wired in both ways, but they will spin in different directions. + is positive and - is negative. But for AC motors (induction, shaded pole) white is neutral, black is hot, and green is ground (ground isn’t required). Getting these mixed up can cause a tripped breaker or motor damage. Shaded pole motors are best to not have the cable cut due to the way the switches are wired.

Hope this helped!

Heh, I 3D printed a replica of my Model 5 years ago and just used a little motor from the hardware department in Lowe's :D The thing was still LOUD and annoyed my wife to no end!

Now I have a much better understanding of tolerances in 3D printing and will try making another one again sometime. This'll be fun :)

I would really like to figure out how to do so for a Little Giant--it might be printed full size too.

The motors i use for my 3D printed sirens are usually Samsung Microwave blower motors because they make pretty loud sirens that can reach around 120-125 decibels. I would reccomend them because they are pretty big to almost make any full sized siren because nascarsimracing1 made a Mini ACA Hurricane with the Samsung microwave blower that is pretty much the same size as a full sized medium sized Air Raid Siren like a Model 2 or E57 but slightly bigger. They are also very easy to wire because they have a wiring diagram that tells which wires go to which. I also made a mini 3T22 with one and i could hear it from my upstairs room with my basement door closed! You can get them for very cheap too. Here is the one i got for it which is 30 dollars at open box condition!

In Total what it cost me for the 10 microfarad capacitor, 3 prong wire, and motor was only 44 dollars which is pretty decent for the budget you need! :D
I officially own an ASC E-class as of 2024. I also own 3D printed mini sirens such as a 3T22, Cyclone 125, and Screamer.
