McKenzie, TN sirens... dead as a doorknob... maybe?

Tue Feb 18, 2025 4:55 pm

Congrats, I have terrible news. On February 15, 2025, a tornadic-supercell was on path to hit us. It's not clear that it touched down, but it did cause some damage. The storm was coming straight for us. A tornado warning was issued, and I ran outside to see what was happening. The sky kept flashing with lightning, the thunder was getting louder and louder.. but I never heard the common Sentry 16V1T-B I always hear when there's a tornado warning. Nothing. Ever since the warning of early April, 2024, that siren has never been heard from again. The siren was broken. McKenzie has 3 sirens, 1 lasting longer than the others and alerted part of the town from 2023-2024, before dying like the others. Though.. I can't be sure they are all dead. After the tornadic part of the storm passed by us, I heard a siren-like sound. It was faint.. It sounded weak. It sounded like the normal Sentry 16V1T-B that didn't go off when the warning was issued.. but it came from a different direction. Note that all the sirens in McKenzie are the same model and were installed around the same time. The siren sounded like it was getting stuck on something.. grinding and sounding under powered and sick at the same time. It was likely a siren, as I heard a faint wind down, before not hearing the siren again. Did they really force the siren to.. work? Not sure how that's possible if the motor supposedly "burnt up" from running it for too long. I collect weather radios now, so its really easy for me to know when a tornado is coming, lol. I want to head to city hall and ask about this, but it has to wait due to snow and frigid temps. Anyway, going back to the storm, the funnel (which was really defined on radar!) drifted to the north of our town, thankfully. 5 minutes after the warning was issued, I heard tons of police sirens, ambulances, and firetrucks. I guarantee they were racing the storm around town yelling at houses for people to shelter. They probably tried the sirens and failed, so they immediately got the police and stuff. Smart, but not at the same time.. They had a whole new siren system planned out, but just never got the new sirens.. If you read my earlier posts, you'll understand better.

Update: I had to update this after reading Facebook posts from the public.
Currently, the city of McKenzie is LYING to the public about the sirens working. Apparently, before the weather outbreak started, the city of McKenzie posted this: "In the event of a tornado warning being issued tonight, the cities mass notification system is working and if it is activated, the siren will also be activated. Most will not be able to hear the siren during a storm so the McKenzie Police Department will be riding around with their sirens on as an additional warning." Well.. I used to hear the sirens just fine before MORE HALF OF THEM WERE PROVEN TO BE BROKEN, WITH A "BURNT UP" MOTOR. Even after that, I still heard the one siren at City Park during downpours and wind. Did I hear it this time? Nope. Instead, AFTER THE STORM PASSED, a siren activated that was NOT the one that was proven to be working at City Park. It was the one south of McKenzie, which seems to be in the worst condition last time I looked at it. How did they get a broken siren to work though.. It's like bringing a skeleton in a grave back to life! I'm concerned, confused, curious, and eager to ask the police department about it. Some people also said the one at City Park which they heard all the time didn't go off. The person who said that LIVES RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM IT. Wow, McKenzie is a liar! Lying to make us feel safe because their lazy, poor selves didn't test them AT ALL over the summer. Now the tornado comes (it caused some damage to the north of us) and the sirens are broken. Another person said they got the "big one" (wth do you mean by big one?) working after the storm was almost over. But I heard it too.. so faint.. but it was really the siren that I never expected to be the working one. I'm sorry if I sound confusing.

I am so so sorry but this really isn’t the place for this. None of us are going to protest and rally because this is a matter that needs to be taken up somewhere else, not on an enthusiast forum.
Sirens may not be sexy, but they sure work.
