Rhode Island Sirens

Thu Apr 03, 2008 10:01 pm

I rarely go to Rhode Island, but I've got two reasons to wonder about sirens there.

1. We have given RI barely any attention in regard to sirens, but it probably is just as rich in sirens and the like if we just look in the right places.
2. I was just at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI for a school trip. I didn't see a single siren on the way and the school has no campus warning siren. I want too find out what I might have missed!

So what do we know about Rhode Island?

I was there recently and I only saw one siren; a Thunderbolt. Rhode Island and Massachusetts are really pretty deep into Diaphone country.

My next question would be...how many towns named Seekonk are there in New England? According to the Siren Archive, there's a Seekonk, Massachusetts with a Diaphone and what looks like an old Federal. On the other hand, I passed right near a Seekonk, Rhode Island on my trip.

And as for it being Diaphone country...well, this may be the siren section of the board, but I'm wondering about Diaphones in RI just as much.

Where was that Thunderbolt? I had my eyes peeled all through Providence, but saw nothing.

I live in RI and I took the pics of Seekonk, Swansea and East Providence that you see on the Siren Archive. You dont get many big sirens here. The biggest I have seen around here is a old Allertor that was said to be a Mobil Directo. I got tons of pics and I sent the pics to the Siren Archive but it hasnt been updated in a long time. Theres is actually no Seekonk, RI. Seekonk is right on the border of East Providence, RI and Seekonk, MA so its probably just a little mistake. Seekonk also has a Fedelcode Model 5 which looks pretty big on the roof of this small little FD. As far as Providence goes, I saw a really old Model 2 on an old warehouse, but thats it. Brown University last month installed Whelens for campus alerts. If your looking for Thunderbolts or 2T22's, you probably wont have much luck finding them. Ive been looking for a long time and the most I see are Model 2's, 5's Sterling sirens or the one Mobil Directo that I found. Diaphones are a pretty common sight. However like the sirens, they arent active. I'm disappointed because the only siren I have ever heard in person is a Model 2, I would love to hear a large siren once.

Sorry, but I really can't remember the community. I just drove by a town on the highway and saw a T-Bolt. It was in western RI.

Not sure of the name of the town, but I know what T Bolt you're talking about...it's by that hill with the big cross on top of it(a church I guess) correct? Theres also shopping centers by it.

Foster, RI, has I believe an older Federal rotating siren that is not a Tbolt...

Block Island has what I believe is a 2001.
