Minot, ND Siren System

Wed Apr 09, 2008 12:22 am

Here are a couple things that I've come across on the Minot, ND siren system that I thought I'd share.

Here's a news story that shows a dual toned Whelen WPS-3016 doing alert.

And I had read somewhere that Minot was replacing their system so I did a little research and it looks like American Signal won the bid.

I love how in the last few months, all of a sudden there has been an explosion in dual tone WS-3016 recordings when, to my knowledge, nobody ever knew they existed before. (run on sentence anyone?)

Actually, I've known for a while that Tulsa, OK has a whole bunch of dual-toned 3016s.

Really? I was wondering about that. I've seen at least two Whelen 3016's while driving a long one of the highways trough the city.

It was a really depressing drive the last time I went through though. Heading one way the siren heads were parked in the eastern direction, than driving back they were in the northern position. I missed a test. :(

Do you know when Tulsa, Oakhurst, Sand Springs, or Sapulpa test their Whelen sirens?

I think Tulsa is either the first Wednesday or every Wednesday of the month. I also believe Sapulpa has a testing schedule, but i was down there for a few months a couple of years ago and never heard them go off once, even when a Flash Flood Warning was issued.

What on earth are they replacing the Whelens for? And with what? ASC makes nothing that will compare with any of those old whelens. Poor people of Minot.
If it ain't made in America it shouldn't be here!

I apologize for bringing up a dead post but I figured there was some good historical information on this thread that I didn't feel like reposting. Here's a form from the city of Minot about their old system of 3016s. I sort of have to laugh at the last post by dieselfan66 too  It has some interesting pictures of the damage that their sirens have accumulated over the years and gives a good explanation of the reason behind the replacement. It's also interesting to see the process that they've gone through and to see the prices for the replacement equipment.

Wow, it's the biodegradable siren. They haven't made it past the 25 year mark.

Dieselfan's post is quite laughable also.

If I remember correctly, the warning system was not activated for the Anhydrous Ammonia spill in 2001?

A Canadian Pacific train left the tracks and cars of Anhydrous Ammonia spilled and caused a cloud that went through Minot.

The spill occured early in the morning and they did not want the general public to be awakened and venture outside?

Part of my National Guard Unit was sent to Minot to operate as Hazardous Material Technicians for that incident.
