Early warning siren system malfunctions

July 14, 2008, Canton, MI Over the past couple of weeks, Canton Public Safety's Early Warning Siren System has had two instances where a couple of the sirens malfunctioned during heavy rain events, causing them to set off. They are in the area of Ford/Sheldon and Warren/Sheldon. We have alerted the vendor and they are working to correct the problem. In the interim, if you hear the outdoor warning siren(s) sound, please check with local weather authorities (Channel 2, 4 or 7), radio station WJR 760 (AM dial) or the national weather service website a www.nws.noaa.gov for weather alerts.

If we are not under a weather warning then something has malfunctioned with the siren, and you can report the problem to Public Safety by calling 734/394-5400, and include where you think the siren is located.

Public Safety tests the entire siren system on the first Saturday of every month. If you live by a siren notice it doesnt go off during the test, please report it as well to the same number. The Public Safety department appreciates the citizen's patience and cooperation until the problem is resolved.

Must be those 2001's that are metal pole mounted?

Probably so Eric. Any idea if those 1003 in attack will be around next month still?

I haven't spoke to OEM lately, but they said it was tied up with wayne county on matching funds or something like that. so the last 5 1003 will be there for awhile. And since the 2001's are having problems, it may be delayed even longer if that doesn't get fixed.

I do know that Canton Twp. replaced the controllers on their Federal 2001 series sirens, with similar equipment from Whelen. Apparently, they decided to do this for some unknown reason a few years ago. I believe the Whelen controllers send information back to the EOC, via two-way radio.

Sincerely yours,

Ron W.
