My Federal signal 28H

This is one of my current restorations. Federal Sign & Signal 28H. When I got it, the armature was frozen & it had a 40 year old layer of grime on it. I took it apart & cleaned it up, now it works like new. This thing is a screamer!

Nice rain of sparks there at the start, guessing you converted this power input a little bit?

On another note, that's a VERY high pitch for that siren.

There were alot of sparks because I was using a 12v 400 ca charger to test it. I didn't have a 12v battery available in the shop at that time and the switch I had wouldn't clip to the chargers alligator clamp. It worked perfectly, but next time it'll be bolted to something because it probably would've become airborne if I held it on for any longer. It has 16 ports.

Is that a starter motor, or did Federal Signal have motors specially built?

Can one learn the date of manufacture from the serial number?

I would like to measure sound output with the \V/ rotor intake cover in place and with it removed.
V for victory?

Those are starter motors. Federal used several different types of serial numbers throughout their history, and they dont have the records for the old ones. V stands for volunteer, as many of these sirens were used on volunteer POVs.

That's right, there were a few sirens sized and priced for individuals to buy.
