Virtual Siren Hunt: Dayton, Ohio area

Ever since I started looking for sirens to photograph in preparation for my recent trip to Xenia, I have been having a lot of fun hunting sirens in the Dayton, Ohio area because of the large variety of older sirens to be found there.

Here's what I've been able to find so far...

Previously mentioned in my topic about my Xenia trip:
2001 behind the school bus garage in West Carrollton, 5833 Student Street (visible from I-75)
Thunderbolt at the Moraine fire station, 2738 Viking Lane (visible from I-75 north, Dryden Road exit)
STH-10 at the Harrison Township fire station, 2245 Needmore Road

New sirens found:
3t22, 3300 block of Pinnacle Avenue in Moraine
Thunderbeam at the West Carrolton fire station, 1700 South Alex Road
Gray 2001 behind the Englewood fire station, 333 West National Road
Thunderbolt at Rotary Park, 2260 Dayton-Xenia Road
T-128 behind the Oakwood municipal complex, 30 Park Avenue
Sentry (10V2T?) next to the Germantown municipal complex, 75 Walnut Street
STH-10? at the Miamisburg fire station, 1st and Ferry
2001 next to the New Lebanon fire station, 115 South Clayton Road
SD-10 on top of East End Community School, 401 Nassau Street

Hitting some of the small towns in neighboring counties:
Thunderbolt behind the Bradford fire station, 200 South Miami Avenue
STH-10? behind the Ludlow Falls fire station, 10 Greenville Avenue

And, the best find...
Model 5 on top of the fire station with a Thunderbeam on a pole next to it, 117 East Walnut Street, Farmersville

Did you see the T-128 across the railroad tracks from the Thunderbolt on Viking Lane? It is in between Springboro Rd and Sandbridge Rd in front of the county incinerators. They can't be more than 300 yards apart. According to the map scale they are roughly 180 to 200 yards apart. Kind of close would'nt you say.

Didn't see that at all, but it's clearly visible on Google Maps. Nice to see another T-128 in that area though

According to the Hamilton Journal-News, Miamisburg, Trotwood and Vandalia are all getting new sirens. To save space, I'm not going to post the articles here (though I do want to highlight part of one article...).

Kettering Uses 10 Warning Sirens (general article about the new sirens)
Miamisburg to get 5 new early warning sirens
Vandalia to install three tornado sirens
City will spend $72,100 to buy 7 warning sirens

Excerpt from the last article:

Although Trotwood had a total of eight sirens for more than 25 years, [Fire Chief Eugene] Lutz said, "There is only one siren that actually works and it only goes off occasionally because the decoder for our dispatcher no longer has the frequency to set them off anymore because of the older technology."

For those who don't want to read the articles, here's a brief summary:

Miamisburg - 10 new sirens at $20,500 a piece
Trotwood - 7 new sirens at $10,300 a piece
Vandalia - 3 new sirens at $20,400 a piece

Obviously Trotwood is purchasing different sirens than Miamisburg and Vandalia. For those familiar with such things, any guesses on which models are being purchased?

I'd say 2001s because they are apparently about $20,000 a piece. The cheaper one could be a low-spec Whelen.

Not really, they are actually on the cheaper side. These are completed installation costs, not just the siren itself.

From what I've heard, a 2001-130 DC is about $11,400 a piece

I'll try to find out. My wife is from Vandalia. Her uncle is the city maitenance supervisor there. He had told me last month that Vandalia was getting new sirens installed and that they were waiting for the city council to vote on and approve the purchase. They do not have any sirens at present. According to my wife they have not had a warning system in place since the city was founded. I'm guessing T-135s or a voice capable system maybe Whelens although I hope not. I was thinking Trotwood would be getting 2001s.

What about Sentry? I know Germantown has a Sentry, and someone else on this forum once said that Miamisburg also has some Sentry sirens (though I haven't found any yet).

I doubt you'll see any Whelens popping up. For some reason, electronic sirens don't seem to be all that popular in this part of the state.

The only reason I thought Whelen is that Columbus is just 60 miles east. $20000 seems high for a mechanical siren unless they are including the cost of the RF control system, the mouting poles and installation labor. I hope your right though I really don't want to welcome any Whelen sirens into this part of the state not that they are bad sirens I just don't care for the sound that they produce. Some Sentry Defenders would be a nice rare addition.If I can find anything out from my wifes uncle i'll post the info as soon as I get it.
