Providence, RI New Sirens

So apparently they've put in a new siren notification system near where I live. Almost right next door to where I live as it happens to be. I was able to get the initial test on video today. They use 158.8575 D031 to activate the sirens.

What are these used for? Tornadoes really aren't common there. Are they for flood warnings?

From the RI-EMA website

The PPESWS test will consist of a loud tone as well as a voice message. The system would only be activated for life-threatening emergencies when there is no advance warning and it is imperative for people to seek shelter. Weather events, such as a blizzard or hurricane, would not warrant activation of the system. Emergencies that would likely require PPESWS activation include a hostile intruder, a large chemical release or an unpredictable natural disaster such as a tornado.

We had 6 or so tornados two years ago in this area.

Wow I knew that empty lot area area looked familiar. Right next to the Dunkin Donuts. I haven't driven by it yet, that's a good spot for that siren though.

I know they do have some masive flood gates around the coast. is that another reason ?
