Hi-Lo capable Castle Castings sirens

Wed Oct 18, 2006 8:44 pm

Some hi-lo capable sirens used to warn of an escape from the Broadmoor secure hospital which is about 25 miles from the centre of London.

These are tested every Monday at 10:00am. Dan Wisbey has a film of one of these tests on his YouTube (although it isn't of one of these sirens). There are apparently 13 in total although I've only ever managed to locate 11. If any UK siren enthusiats know where they all are, please let me know!

Great pictures.
Those are some big mechanism-boxes for the solenoids. Are those electromagnetically controlled?

Those are large solenoid enclosures, and that's a much more elaborate tower than you'd ever see over here, too.

I'm assume they're electromagnetic, but I'm not absolutely sure. Klaxon Signals, who make the sirens like this nowadays just say "solenoid operated shutter mechanisms can be fitted at extra cost" on their web site.

I wish the metal hospital around here had a siren and to bad it closed down. all tho haveing a friend who works security at the old site may be they have a siren some were hidden. all tho many of the buildings were torn down the main building still stands. some might have heard of it the danvers state insane asylum.

The Oregon State Hospital in Salem has no sirens, but there are two large steam whistles that sound with the fire alarm system.
