My siren photos from five years ago

Sat May 08, 2010 10:24 pm

I took all these photos five years ago. Photobucket sent an email to me saying that the account had not been active in two years. I opened the account and found these photos. There are a lot more photos, but you can look them up on the Siren Archive under Ontario.

Isn't Ontario or some cities in Ontario supposed to get a Outdoor Warning System? I remember hearing this on the news after the unexpected tornado outbreak last August.

Nice pictures by the way.

The one above is in St. Clair.
And is still there. Streetview is bad for this one.

If anyone needs a system, it's Windsor, but so far we haven't got anything.

I remember some of those pictures. Brings back memories of the board a while ago.

It was debated for a day or two, but quickly shoved aside after an important public figure stated that in the Greensburg tornado siren didn't save the lives of those who died.

I'm not kidding:

In the U.S., all TV stations in the path of a storm run warnings on tickers across the bottom of the screen. Many communities in the Midwest area known as "tornado alley" also have sirens to alert residents.

Efficiency doubted

But sometimes that system can't prevent the destruction left by tornadoes either, said Robinson.

When one of the most devastating tornadoes in recent memory ? an EF-5, which is the highest rating on the tornado scale ? struck Greensburg, Kan., in 2007, a warning was issued just 15 minutes before it destroyed 95 per cent of the town.

Murdoch doubts the efficiency of the siren system, given the unpredictability of tornadoes.

"I think it would have made you look up for a minute, but, bang ? then it happens. I don't know what more they could have done," he said.
