Second Jailbar Thunderbolt in Denver

Thu Nov 11, 2010 11:10 pm

I was looking at the Denver system in Google yesterday and noticed that this one at Cole Middle School looked like it was 1) crazy tall on the roof and 2) had equally crazy guy wires supporting it. I immediately wondered if there could be a second Jailbar Thunderbolt in Denver, since these two traits set apart the first one I found.

One Tic-Tac-Toe 1000 has already been found, at Lincoln Elementary:

This siren answers some questions regarding the color scheme which couldn't be answered by the rusty one at Lincoln. Apparently these first sirens were painted all-black (!) and had yellow chopper caps installed when the dual-tone choppers were put in. Not sure about the unpainted rotators, maybe they were replaced at some point.

Photos GO!

P.S. From an architectural standpoint, Cole Middle School is one of the coolest buildings in the city. I didn't get photos of the best parts unfortunately.

Wow it looks great!

What was the motive for Denver to put dual-toned choppers in?

Because Denver knows whats up :)

Humor aside, has a jailbar Thunderbolt with the original striped paintjob ever been found in the wild? I don't recall ever hearing about one for sure.

Not sure. They may have done it to achieve a more uniform sound in the siren system (the rest of the Thunderbolts in Denver are 1000Ts and a pair of 1003s) or maybe in response to the Civil Defense's 1954 dual-tone requirement.

The uniform sound idea sounds legitimate for sure.

The CD dual-tone requirement was just a purchasing advantage. CD only granted a benefit of its matching funds program to those who bought dual-tone sirens, thus the reason for many cities having dual-tone sirens.

Where are the 1003's in Denver? I only know of one on top of a building at Yosemite and Hampden. Also thought there were a few 1000s, I remember hearing one...

Thomas Jefferson High School also has a 1003 which I plan to get photos of Friday. Here is the evidence.

Funny how I've driven past that several times and never noticed it's a 1003 until I saw the videos.

As for 1000s, I can see no evidense that suggents there would be any, but it's definately possible that there is one or maybe more. Where were you when you heard it?

I was in the Wal-Mart parking lot at 36th and Quebec. At the time, I didn't know there was a 1000T right across the street, but I sure heard it.

Hey! The second-nearest siren to there is the Jailbar Thunderbolt at Smiley Junior High School! I bet that siren just didn't get a dual-tone chopper swap like the other two Jailbars. You may have heard that.
