New Jersey Sirens

Mon Jan 03, 2011 2:39 am

In a few weeks, I will be staying near Springfield NJ for a few days. So far I have found 2 SD-10`s in Springfield, does anybody know of anymore? Are they even still used?

Also, does anybody know where the 550AT in Newark is, since it is near where I`ll be, I might be able to take a few pictures but I can`t find it.

Any info appreciated!

I'm supprised you found any still up. GovDeals.com had 4 or 5 SD-10's from Springfield on their auction site about 6 months ago. They went as a lot. I think it was less than a grand for all of them.
My neighbors just love me !!

I purchased the auction lot of Springfield's SD-10's (there were 4 of them) to use for parts in a restoration I was working on last fall.

While emailing one of the Township Supervisors I learned that there had originally been 6 SD-10's, but over the years two were taken down. The remaining four were on utility poles and there was some concern that one of them might fall because it was leaning pretty bad. The Township decided to remove them before they caused any damage, and that was how they wound up being auctioned.

In the fifties and sixties the sirens were tested weekly (Saturdays at noon I think) and they were also used to announce school closings due to snow, but none of the people I talked to in Springfield could remember hearing them within the last twenty years.

I still have enough parts to make two complete sirens, although I haven't tested the motors yet. If the motors are OK I will probably restore one more and see if there is anyonre interested in it. The sheet metal is pretty sad, and it will take some work to make a decent siren out of the pieces. Here are some photos:

I know of a lot of sirens In Jersey. If you go to North Arlington there are 4004's, Fair Lawn and Paterson have 2805s/10s. Glen Rock, Belleville, Bloomfield, Ridgewood have model 2's and 5/7's. If I can think of any others in that area I will let you know.

I know Hawthorne, which is next to Fair Lawn has air horns on their firehouses that sound at noon, and Prospect Park which is next to Hawthorne has a strange model 2 setup with 3 cone horns underneath it which also sound at noon. I can tell you exactly where all the Whelens are in Fair Lawn as I grew up there.

Can I add you to my currently empty New jersey siren map so you can help me mark the locations?
