Re: Federal STH10A Troubleshooting Questions

Wed Jul 17, 2013 9:21 pm

Well I got the siren down and started dismantling it. The motor was rusted out and it is open circuit across all legs . Right now I am looking for a Motor for this siren. Another problem that I have its that I can't seem to get the chopper off of the shaft. Any suggestions would be excellent because I am unable to fully remove this motor until I get the chopper of the shaft. Lol its becoming quite a project .

From Jeb (holler) her said

If its a single phase you'll likely be better off getting another single phase STH-10 from West Shore Services, if its 3 phase you'll have to have a custom motor or see if you can get the original re-wound. If the armature is damaged as well, then the cost will probably exceed what the sirens worth and it maybe cheaper just to get another one from West Shore. Jeb "holler" will be along in a bit to further explain that.. I happened to be on the phone with him when I read this post.

Understood.... it is a 3 phase siren. A local fire company may have a spare motor and I'm waiting to a hear back from them. I'm hoping I can get the chopper off without damaging anything. The motor is in very bad shape. A new motor might be the easiest route. Some damage was done to the bearing ring... at least what was left of it.... during disassembly.

At this point I would consider just getting another siren. You are rapidly approaching the point of diminishing returns.

Where are you located?

To get the chopper off, remove the 3 bolts that are on the chopper as well as the plate. Then screw in a steering wheel puller to the outer 2 bolts and pull it out.

That picture has a Gib key and you have to remove the Gib key first also if the Siren is rusted. The rotor is not going to come off with out a fight. I have had this happen on STL and 2T22 had to spray liquid wrench also had to heat up the shaft and had to use a impact wrench on the puller

Good call on the steering wheel puller. I need to see if I can find one. The key is badly rusted on the shaft. I did actually try heating the chopper but not the shaft itself . I may have to give that a try also. If I end up looking for a new or used motor or used sth10, any idea how much I'd be looking at? This is a project that I'm helping this fire company out with. I have to see how much they're actually willing to spend. Thanks for all the help on this thus far.

Ah ok. Contact Rheems1 here on the board. He can probably help you find another siren.

Sorry to bring this back up... I have had no luck getting this shaft removed. I made an attempt to contact Rheems1 but my PM'a don't seem to be going through. Hoping that the user see's this and contacts me. Thanks for the help.
