FS The Informer

Sat Aug 31, 2013 4:46 pm

Ok so I was working late last night and I went into the offic and I heard this horrible static sound. I found what was doing it. It was The Informer. It was flashing alert and making this horrible static sound then it got quiet just flashing Alert Then a second worth of static then quiet again followed by 2 seconds of static. Then the static would come back then repeat the whole cycle over again.
Is there somthing wrong with it? I swear I am the only one who knows what this thing is for. Everyone else is scared to death of a tornado because they can't hear the sirens. If it is not broken what is making it do this?

It sounds like the Informer was in monitor mode. Pressing the green monitor button briefly will disable selective sgnalling and turn the Informer into a carrier squelch receiver. Pressing the monitor button and holding it for a few seconds will disable selective signalling and open the squelch. Monitor is useful for checking the quality of a received signal without having to trip the receiver, and can be used to aim antennas, etc.

My guess is that the intermittent bursts of noise you heard were caused by a weak signal just barely strong enough to open the squelch, probably being generated by a PC, alarm system, or other nearby electronic equipment. Pressing the reset button should return it to selective signalling mode.
