Australian Whelen 4004

Fri Oct 18, 2013 3:12 am

Interesting. I never expected to see a Whelen all make it all the way to Australia, let alone see one & any siren running in Aus! . This is a treat to see. I am curious if any Federal Signal & American Signal Corporation mechanical sirens have made their way over here to which have not yet being discovered.

Actually, we have ourselves a Vortex here. Note the Type 1 cabinet. It is of a single construction (note one door for both the battery compartment and the electronics) and the arrangement of the internals doesn't match the current 4000/2900 series cabinets (where there's nothing in front of the amps and the cabinet is elongated.

Better photograph: http://floodforce.com.au/wp-content/upl ... -Siren.jpg (the photo is very high res and wouldn't have fit on here).

Meanwhile, it seems Australia has at least some 2800s floating around for tsunami warnings.

Ah righto. I am glad to see we have some big sirens out here now, still a long way of before we have sirens everywhere that are in use like America. We had bushfires in New South Wales recently. I am hoping Australia gets a outdoor siren system in place in the future. If we do I am hoping we get mechanical sirens where I am. It be nice if they are dual tone to.

Looks like the Kiwis are building a Carterlike monstrosity that they might be willing to sell you.

I'm in Victoria, we have sirens here but only in the regional areas. But, I recently requested that sirens will be installed in the city areas.

I posted this earlier today in an Aus topic over in the main forum..

Downtown Sydney has an emergency siren system that plays a strange loud tone. Do you know what type of sirens they are?

They start at 0:35

I heard that the Sydney "sirens" are Bose PA speakers adapted for Civil Defense use. Actually, in the video at 0:43, you can see one of the setups.
