Siren Found in Port of Providence, Rhode Island

Sun May 18, 2014 12:14 am

Hey everyone, I'm back, this time with a new siren I discovered in Providence, Rhode Island. Along Route 1A in the port district, it is the only freestanding siren that I know of in RI. Now, I'm not an expert in sirens, only an enthusiast, so I'm not exactly sure what type or model it is. And the only guess I have as to why it is there would be to alert in the event of a ship or oil tank explosion, or for hurricane warning. I'm not aware of any other sirens like this in Providence or RI, so if anyone has some info on this, feel free to leave a comment! :D

Welcome back! From the sounds of it, the Port of Providence installed four Whelen WPS-2900 series sirens back in 2009 to warn of chemical spills and severe weather, as well as to supplement the Whelen system at Brown University that was installed in 2008. The Port's system consists of two WPS-2906s, a WPS-2908, and a WPS-2904. Brown University has three WPS-2900 series sirens in various locations on campus, and Johnson & Wales University has just one siren that is a part of the Port's system (the WPS-2904 I believe).

Here is some more information on the three siren systems:

Ah yes, I've seen those on Street View before. I've been meaning to add them to my RI map for some time now.

I seem to recall there being a repainted Mobil-Directo on some apartments in Providence...
