Re: A New Siren from Sentry Siren is Coming......

I never liked that they rip on other siren types and companies. It's one thing to say you make a great product to compete with competitors, it's another entirely to say all electronics and solar powered sirens are bad. I see lots of solar powered sirens lately, a lot in Joliet and I have seen them in other areas too. In a situation where running electrical service is cost prohibitive, solar is a good option. SCADA would check everything. Any siren without 2 way monitoring can fail without anyone knowing until it is needed. Electronics have their place too. Not a fan of them for municipal severe weather warnings, but they are good for outdoor areas and good for other types of emergencies where weather garbling the voice wouldn't be a factor. Refinery accidents and such.

Actually, refineries are probably the worst environment for issuing voice messages: the message echoes a dozen times over through the maze of piping and infrastructure. I could barely make out a Modulator's garble come test day in Sarnia's industrial area, and that siren is located in an open rail yard.

I don't know about you guys, but I'd really like to see Sentry make a Sterling throwback and call it the M-40. :D

If you are within the the 70 dB range of the 2800 or 2900 series Whelen here, the voice is fairly clear. I like Sentry like I like Whelen, but they got me feeling some kind of way with what they said. I doubt they would make a Sterling style siren anymore. The M-10 and the 10V2T are the same siren, but the 10V2T seems like it would have better overall range as an omni siren with it being setup vertically with the horns added. Like those before me have stated, it's probably a 40V1T-B. They may have found a way to make the thing run without their being an "oh lord it's a fire" moment.

I know a horizontal siren is out of the question, but wouldn't that be something?

Maybe it will be a 60V3T and 135 dB(C) at 100 feet. :)

I'd have to agree with them not having solar sirens for one reason. I have nothing against solar energy, but a siren powered solely by batteries will not operate correctly if there is a problem with the batteries or chargers. A good example would be one of the 2001-130s on my university's campus. It's solar only and must have had a battery or charger go bad and went several months without activating because it didn't have enough power. I'd rather have true battery backup where the siren runs off the power grid until it goes out, then use batteries as a last resort. That's why it's called battery backup.

I have to agree with Tyler on this one. It's just like the police installing a solar powered speed limit sign for drivers to watch their speed. Cloudy day = battery dies and eventually won't hold a charge. A solar powered tornado siren is nearly the same thing where if it's a cloudy day and a tornado warning is issued, the siren's batteries will be used to run the siren and won't be recharged until the next sunny day. Solar powered machines are currently unreliable.

But if AC is knocked out it isn't going to recharge until AC is restored.

Half a dozen of one six of another. Though Tyler raises a fascinating point about bad battery chargers and primary battery operation.

That's why I'd prefer solar charging to be solely a means for charging a set of backup batteries with the siren hooked up to AC as its primary means of function. Of course that kind of premium is gonna charge you an arm and leg, but you'd have an independent charging source with a siren that won't cycle the life out of those batteries under a normal scenario. Then again, if disaster strikes once, it would always be a smart idea to have your radio or phone handy in case of the next impending doom, as most sirens are usually not gonna stick around if knocked over anyway.
