Super Sirex in Binghamton, NY Area?

Wed Dec 07, 2016 11:14 pm

New York is awesome. While there are a lot of Model 2s, 5s, and STH-10s, you occasionally stumble upon something old and unique.

Such as this thing. I'm linking to the map rather than taking a screenshot so that you can view the siren from different angles.

At first I thought it was a Sterling, but then I looked closer and noticed that it was a little different. The ports for example, look nothing like the long skinny Sterling ports. Then earlier today I actually drove by it, and while it may not look so on Google, it is HUUUUGE. This led me to think that it's an H.O.R. Super Sirex (wasn't H.O.R. based in NY?), perhaps with some kind of custom housing. What do you fine folks think?

As you can see, it now serves as decoration, having been replaced by a Model 5. But the tower that the Model 5 is on definitely looks like it could've once held this beast. Interestingly enough, three of the other four companies in the Vestal FD have towers just like that one (the fourth is a newer station, and uses two telephone poles). I wonder if all four companies had Super Sirexes (or whatever this thing is) at one point. And in case you were wondering, the other three stations also have Model 5s, except for one which has a Sentry 3V8.

This is actually like ten minutes from where I go to school, so I'll probably go check it out one of these days. If I can do so without looking suspicious, haha.

It is indeed a Super Sirex, the narrow stator design is a dead giveaway it is a HOR product, looks like it is single tone 10/10 port. And yes, HOR was based out of Long Island. I am about an hour and a half north of Vestal, I will definitely have to check it out the next time I am in the area. It sucks they don't use it anymore, it would make that model 5 look like chump change!

EDIT: Found an article with an interesting story about this siren!

The Super Sirex is a legendary siren. It was a known powerful beast at the time. The City of Chicago has installed 5 during the 1950's. It's crazy that it was supposedly hear throughout the entire island of Guam! Sure has a great history. Sad that it seems to be missing the rotator. Wonder what happened with it.

EOWS1212man: Great find with that article! I was planning to do some research into the town's history. It does kinda suck that they don't use it any more, but I definitely think it was much too big for the size of the town. I can hear the Model 5 from where I live if the wind is right; I can only imagine what it'd be like with this monster. The sound output is pretty close to a Thunderbolt, am I right? I remember hearing that it was 125 dB.

Unfortunately that article didn't mention if the other companies used Super Sirexes as well. I'll have to see if there's more information out there. If they did, there would be quite a ruckus if all four companies got called at once!

Let me know when and we can both check it out (if you want). There are a few interesting sirens in the area too. I've only been here a year so I'm still not that familiar with it, but I did map out quite a few locations.

Oh, speaking of that, I found one siren that I had no idea on the identity of, but now I'm thinking it could be another Super Sirex. It's enclosed in a tower thing, but the ends stick out. Click here to see. It's in the same general area. Wonder if it's still active... They could've put it in the tower to keep the noise down. Either that or they have no idea how it works and think that the sound comes out of the horns. XD

That Super Sirex wouldn't be very loud. They only stuck the intakes out of the tower.
