Fantasy Siren Map Challenges 2020

Thu Nov 12, 2020 10:12 pm

So this has been a dead thing for some time, but I've recently gotten some feedback of people wanting to start a new one. So without further exposition, here's the thread:

Fantasy Siren Map Challenges 2020
I realize this looks a lot like a video game ad...
Have you ever wanted to plan out your own siren system? Would you like going back in time, choosing different models for different locations? This, and much more, will be happening with the new Fantasy Siren Map Challenges 2020.

Basic Instructions
To make a map, go to google.com/maps/d/ and click new map. You may also use Google Earth if you are more comfortable, just make sure to import that data into My Maps. Once you get into My Maps, you may want to give your map a name and description, but for the description, I would wait until the end. Then, you probably want to change the base map, located at the bottom, to satellite. Now you get to decide where your sirens are located. Press the "add marker" button, and click anywhere on the ground, then voila, you have placed a location. You can then name this location as the model of siren it represents. Once you are finished with the system, you can post it here, just make sure to set sharing to public first.

Descriptions
For the description, and in your post when you post the map here, the backstory for your system is important. You can include testing times, siren installation info, and pretty much anything else you would want people to know about the system.

Icons & Radii
Here are some icons. Credits go to 4j25 for most of them. You can use these in place of default pins. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing
For radii, I recommend using Google Earth. The measuring tool built in is very useful, and you can give specific ranges by measuring them out from sirens.

Neither of these are required for points, but they make your map look pretty.

Each week, the challenge will begin, which will typically include a city or county. There will be a theme which participants must follow. The challenge will be open for submissions until the end of the week, but can be extended longer if there aren't enough submissions. The winner of the challenge will get to determine the next location and backstory. Due to the system of different judges every week not working out very well in the past, I will judge the submissions (don't worry, I'm not biased, I promise) and who wins the challenge, getting to pick the next location.

Here are some factors I will judge based on:
• Realistic placement of sirens
• Adherence to original theme
• Good backstory

Disclaimer
Please keep it civil in this thread. Don't fight, it won't get you anywhere except it might get you banned. And I definitely wouldn't want the thread locked.

Stay tuned for the first challenge, which I'll post by the end of the day!

Challenge 1

Alright here it is, the first challenge for this new thread. For the location, we're gonna be doing Howard County, Indiana. I thought this would be a good starting location, since it has one larger town with a few smaller ones. The county doesn't operate sirens, and neither does the largest city, Kokomo. The only sirens, to my knowledge, are owned by some industrial plants in the city. The story, for this first challenge, is going to be pretty much whatever you want, as long as it's believable.

Here is my "submission", but it won't be graded, I'm just gonna use it as an example, and I wanted to share it anyways. I didn't make this recently. Let me know if the URL doesn't work.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid= ... sp=sharing

In 1999, Howard County wanted to consolidate all of the sirens in the county into one system. they put out a bid for this service, a few siren replacements and a few installations. Federal Signal won the bid against American Signal and Whelen Engineering, the county noticing that most of their old sirens were made by them. 5 2001-SRN sirens were installed in 2000 and a few sirens were moved around.

In 2004, the county wanted more coverage. They called up Federal Signal who installed 2001-SRNB's in the dense areas not already covered, and again moved some sirens around. Some controller swaps were also done on electronic sirens.

In 2014, the county wanted sirens in all areas with at least some coverage. They decided they would do this in 2 phases due to the cost. In 2015, 2001-130's and Eclipse 8's were installed in the most important areas, and in 2019, 508-128's were installed everywhere else. The county also custom-fitted battery backup to all sirens without it and upgraded some old controllers.

Sirens are tested on the first Wednesday of each month at noon in 1 minute of Alert. In tornado warnings/severe storms with 70+mph winds and large hail, the system goes off in 3 minutes of Attack/Wail every 10 minutes, and in other emergencies, the system goes off in Fast Wail.

Let me know if any of you have questions. This map will be due Friday, November 20th, or Saturday, November 21st at midnight.

May I just suggest we do something other than Howard County? Most fantasy maps are based around there.

Oh, and by the way, Russiaville operates sirens. They have a 3T22, STH-10, and Model 5.

Please keep discussion to a minimum so the thread doesn’t get too cluttered. Yes, I forgot to mention the Russiaville sirens.

It probably sucks but this is my first time doing this. I only put sirens in towns that popped up when I looked up "Towns In Howard County In".

Testing times are 5:00 PM, every first Monday of the month.

Sirens are tested in alert. For emergencies, the mechanical sirens to attack, and the electronic sirens do hi-lo and voice.
