So this has been a dead thing for some time, but I've recently gotten some feedback of people wanting to start a new one. So without further exposition, here's the thread:
Fantasy Siren Map Challenges 2020
I realize this looks a lot like a video game ad...
Have you ever wanted to plan out your own siren system? Would you like going back in time, choosing different models for different locations? This, and much more, will be happening with the new Fantasy Siren Map Challenges 2020.
Basic Instructions
To make a map, go to google.com/maps/d/ and click new map. You may also use Google Earth if you are more comfortable, just make sure to import that data into My Maps. Once you get into My Maps, you may want to give your map a name and description, but for the description, I would wait until the end. Then, you probably want to change the base map, located at the bottom, to satellite. Now you get to decide where your sirens are located. Press the "add marker" button, and click anywhere on the ground, then voila, you have placed a location. You can then name this location as the model of siren it represents. Once you are finished with the system, you can post it here, just make sure to set sharing to public first.
Descriptions
For the description, and in your post when you post the map here, the backstory for your system is important. You can include testing times, siren installation info, and pretty much anything else you would want people to know about the system.
Icons & Radii
Here are some icons. Credits go to 4j25 for most of them. You can use these in place of default pins. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing
For radii, I recommend using Google Earth. The measuring tool built in is very useful, and you can give specific ranges by measuring them out from sirens.
Neither of these are required for points, but they make your map look pretty.
Each week, the challenge will begin, which will typically include a city or county. There will be a theme which participants must follow. The challenge will be open for submissions until the end of the week, but can be extended longer if there aren't enough submissions. The winner of the challenge will get to determine the next location and backstory. Due to the system of different judges every week not working out very well in the past, I will judge the submissions (don't worry, I'm not biased, I promise) and who wins the challenge, getting to pick the next location.
Here are some factors I will judge based on:
• Realistic placement of sirens
• Adherence to original theme
• Good backstory
Disclaimer
Please keep it civil in this thread. Don't fight, it won't get you anywhere except it might get you banned. And I definitely wouldn't want the thread locked.
Stay tuned for the first challenge, which I'll post by the end of the day!
