My neighbor had readings of over 95 decibels in his house with the windows closed. this is no way to have to live. this is not the stone ages. volunteer firemen tend to be very hard core about what they do and always have their pagers with them and constantly check them. this siren is NOT needed. as far as traffic and clearing the street, the trucks exit onto wellwood ave (not a residential street) and they have control over the traffic lights out frontRobert Gift wrote:Makes the circus all the more fun!Rob 17th wrote:... Some think it encourages the public to get off the streets so that volunteers can get to the station sooner.
Or that it helps clear traffic near the station so the apparatii can get out.
Back when sirens were used to call volunteers, it was lucky to have more than one call a week.
Now they should cease sounding the siren for all those ever-increasing calls, many of which are BS calls.
Or restrict the siren to just fire calls.
Children and adults can close their ears.
Pets, infants and toddlers cannot.
no balls? so how close do you live to one? it went off 5 times today and not a single truck left the house.Cyrun wrote:Phantom - Let us know how the complaint department goes regarding the T-Bolts with the community. It has been awhile since EFFD has had any form of an audible system, so I'm sure the BOFC phone lines will be ringing.
The problem we are having is that our current BOFC (Board of Fire Comm.) have no "balls" and are very intimidated by a few complaining community members on the use of the sirens.
I love sirens but that is ridiculous.Rob 17th wrote:no balls? so how close do you live to one? it went off 5 times today and not a single truck left the house.
Real simple question; What was there first, you or the siren?Rob 17th wrote:i can understand how some of you are enthusiastic about sirens but you need to understand somerthing about this one:
The one on the corner of wellwood ave and 17th street is in a residential neighborhood.
It is within 50 feet of some peoples homes.I myself live about 3 houses away from it.
It has given decibel readings well OVER 109
?
I've heard it - not much different than the ones over in Copiague. At least at some point it is facing the cemetery. How much different is it than the Sterling M they had up? Sterlings have a much shriller sound than Thunderbolts. I would be much more annoyed by the sound of a Sterling than that of a Thunderbolt. The T-bolt sound is softer around the edges, especially that of the 1003 - which is what EFFD has installed. I am not 100% in agreement with using it for ambulance calls. Fires, yes. Hey Rob - have you ever been near a diaphone when it sounded? Now THAT's an attention-getter! Farmingdale has one.Rob 17th wrote:i can understand how some of you are enthusiastic about sirens but you need to understand somerthing about this one:

It goes off several times a day all week long and on the weekends.
It rotates, so at some point it is facing right at you. this makes it impossible to be outside without the possibility of PERMANENT hearing damage.
Good luck to my neighbors that work nights and used to sleep during the day
