Yes, it really is a shame that sirens are not made to detect people. I agree that people should not be subject to that level of sound pressure on their own lawn, there is always mistakes with the location of sirens. Although there could be better places to place a siren, places like Long Island are crowded no matter what...so this can't be helped in some cases. I thank god that we do not live in a city or crowded community. I am basing my idea of LI being crowded because of the pictures I have seen of the place, I will never go there to see for myself.

Makes the circus all the more fun!
Some think it encourages the public to get off the streets so that volunteers can get to the station sooner.
Or that it helps clear traffic near the station so the apparatii can get out.

Back when sirens were used to call volunteers, it was lucky to have more than one call a week.
Now they should cease sounding the siren for all those ever-increasing calls, many of which are BS calls.
Or restrict the siren to just fire calls.

Children and adults can close their ears.
Pets, infants and toddlers cannot.

My neighbor had readings of over 95 decibels in his house with the windows closed. this is no way to have to live. this is not the stone ages. volunteer firemen tend to be very hard core about what they do and always have their pagers with them and constantly check them. this siren is NOT needed. as far as traffic and clearing the street, the trucks exit onto wellwood ave (not a residential street) and they have control over the traffic lights out front

I have heard this from a man we know in relation to our FD's siren "There really is no reason to have the siren, the fire fighters all have pagers now, where back in the old days they needed the siren. Now the only reason they activate it is so the old people know when to turn on their scanners".

The problem we are having is that our current BOFC (Board of Fire Comm.) have no "balls" and are very intimidated by a few complaining community members on the use of the sirens.
no balls? so how close do you live to one? it went off 5 times today and not a single truck left the house.

I love sirens but that is ridiculous.
All medical calls?
I'd be embarrassed to have a heart attack and disturb the whole community over my private problem.
Don't they have pagers and Minitors, etc?
Haven't they worn their siren out by now?

It has given decibel readings well OVER 109
?
Real simple question; What was there first, you or the siren?

I really dislike people who move in next to airports because houses are cheap and female dog about the noise. I also dislike to the point of wanting to watch them drown people who move into waterways and cry about flooding.

It goes off several times a day all week long and on the weekends.
It rotates, so at some point it is facing right at you. this makes it impossible to be outside without the possibility of PERMANENT hearing damage.
Good luck to my neighbors that work nights and used to sleep during the day
I've heard it - not much different than the ones over in Copiague. At least at some point it is facing the cemetery. How much different is it than the Sterling M they had up? Sterlings have a much shriller sound than Thunderbolts. I would be much more annoyed by the sound of a Sterling than that of a Thunderbolt. The T-bolt sound is softer around the edges, especially that of the 1003 - which is what EFFD has installed. I am not 100% in agreement with using it for ambulance calls. Fires, yes. Hey Rob - have you ever been near a diaphone when it sounded? Now THAT's an attention-getter! Farmingdale has one.

Fire sirens need to be:

- Sounded only for fire calls
- Have a one minute or less signal
- Shut OFF at night

This way you keep the neighbors happy and the community safe.
