Just an outsider offering advice...

$25 a month seems expensive to me. Do you really need the business account?

I have the same type (phpbb) forums on my website and I only pay $9.95 a month for hosting and $10 a year for the domain and the best part, I don't have to have ANY ads.

My host is Dreamhost.

It's most likely a bandwidth issue. This forum, and site altogether, has a large number of frequent visiting members.

DreamHost is horrible. Over the past year they might have improved, but lots of long load times and very crammed servers.

Dreamhost, while well known, doesn't have a great reputation.

Adam - if you can give us a good idea of the amount of space and bandwidth you need, we can likely help you find better hosting for less. I don't know too much about hosting, but I know several people who do (one of whom has worked in the hosting industry for 10+ years).

Interesting, I've never had any problems with them except for the occasional outage. Oh well, was just offering my $0.02

Firstly, thank you to everyone offering to help with hosting. I have had cheaper hosting plans in the past, but email and uptime have been issues. My personal experience with the "unlimited everything, $6/month" hosting companies is that they are massively oversold and hard to get in touch with for support. I've used Verio, ValueWeb and other similar services in the past, and wasn't happy with any of them.

Dedicated board providers like Proboards, while customizable, would be an evolutionary step back for this board. Those few of you who were around when Jason had the siren board hosted on such a service may remember how well that went... There is a lot to be said for having total control over your database!

I've been in touch with Adam P. and Jason C. about transferring the board to their control starting in '09. Adam's looking into setting up phpBB right now. A few donations have come in over the last 2 days that has me covered through the end of the year. Thank you to the donors!

That has got to be the best news Ive heard all day! This board is a resource that almost HAS to be kept on the internet as long as possible, as there really isn't that much else geared towards OWS and sirens in general.
Still close enough to a Fed Sig 550AT to drive out on test day: First Friday in May - 7PM!

As Adam said, most likely Adam Pollak will be taking over and hosting it on his web server. All the details are still to be worked out, and we'll know more of what exactly what's going to happen in the coming months. As for now, we're working on making the transfer as smooth as possible. (and as a teaser, the board will be upgraded!)

Does this mean you should stop donating? Absolutely not! But just rest assured that The Siren Board isn't going to be deleted nor will it be changed significantly or handed over to someone shady.

If any of you have any questions, feel free to ask us!

Two other forums I frequent, DJForums and Unnet.net, use vBulletin exclusively. I am very pleased with the formatting and coding those two sites use.
