2001 bashing

Wed Sep 15, 2010 4:08 am

Allertor 113: Ask yourself why all the bashing of the 2001? Your comments about posing a threat to CD era sirens are ridiculous and absurd. The Thunderbolt and Allertor (your namesake) were designed to penetrate and carry the sound to warn people. The 2001 is probably the worst siren on the market for warning citizens as the frequency is about 800mhz and is not tested according to ANSI Standards S12.14. It amazes me that the officials who buy 2001 have not done their homework and will settle for an inferior product. The 2001 covers 4 square miles at 130db (untested) and the T-128 covers 10.4 square miles at 128db for about the same cost. Now you know why all the 2001 bashing and I do respect your opinion about the 2001, but next time do your homework so you don?t look uninformed. Your comment ?Who cares if it doesn't sound as good as a Thunderbolt or a 2t22? is ridiculous because a siren is not about how good it sounds, but how it penetrates and grabs your attention. To trivialize the sound of a siren is an insult to a lot of the people on this site who are experts on sirens, of which I am not one of those experts.

This Tbolt is 35+ years or so. I prefer this tbolt. It roars and will rattle the hell out of your chest when it is pointing at you. I never hear the 2001 to the north of me over the Tbolts.

Uh, he never said anything about the 2001 posting a threat to any of the old CD era sirens. He said that he's tired of all the bashing done to the 2001 siren. Nor did he ask why all the bashing was done. Think before you post, please.
Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right.

I think he knows what he is talking about we have both done a few months of research on this matter and the figures don't lie. He has been dealing in sirens for 30 years or better. Servicing building them and installing them from P-10s to 2001s. The 2001-130 may be reliable ,but it lacks sound penetration due to it's high frequency. Any Acoustical engineer would tell you the same. I'm trying to remain objective here and state some facts. 500hz will simply carry and penetrate farther than 795to 800hz plain and simple. So it's not really a question of reliability it's a question of optimum sound frequency. The 2001-130 is'nt ANSI field tested the T-128 is ANSI field tested. Sorry if this ruffles your feathers fellas. Some of the older 2001s penetrate much better than the newest version does. I would say that the 2001-130s are more like the KIAs of sirens rather than the Honda. Ha and a smite to boot.

Yes, from a musical quality, it isn't terribly exciting. But Springfield, MO has a system of them and MAN do they carry. I'm living away from campus this year, and those 2001s roar in a storm. The sound is effectively eerie and attention getting. They're loud. They may not penetrate as well as a T-128 would, but they get the job done. In other words, the 2001 is the Honda of sirens. A car enthusiast might see the Honda as boring, but it gets you from Point A to Point B effectively and reliably.

it's not an argument. it's an opinion. we're all entitled to our opinions and can state them if we so choose. thats a right. :P

2001 bashing

Crazywarriorman: I do not know what you read, but Allertor 113 does imply that the 2001 is posing (not posting) a threat to the CD era sirens and that is why everyone is bashing it. You are correct in assuming he did not do his homework before posting. So before you post and insult someone you need to read the article, digest the article, consider who wrote the article, and be objective in your assessment of the situation so you don?t embarrass yourself. By the way I would prefer a 55 year old Thunderbolt over a 2001-130 to protect my community.

Which means I can have my opinion, and since I disagree with your opinion, I can also argue it. That's a right, too.

All I can say is that people in my county constantly complain they didn't hear the sirens (report them as broke yet the siren a 2001 did indeed activate after further checking.) Only the people had the misfortune of not being in the neighborhood of the siren.

Just about every siren in the county now is a 2001 wtih exception to the T-bolt downtown. Say what you want, but the t bolt will be heard over 5 other 2001's in the city unless one is a few blocks away from the 2001.

This summer a tornado warning in the middle of the night triggered a siren activation. It wasn't the closer 2001 (mere blocks away) that woke me up but it was the t-bolt downtown firing up that got the attention.

I fully concur the 2001's are not worth what a community pays for them in terms of coverage touted by FS. I know of two townships here (he burbs) that have doubled siren coverage (2001's) 8 or more sirens (after being told 4 would do the job) per township and still have people complaining they don't hear the sirens. All of this is because of (not a thing wrong the are only for outdoors) marketing a high pitched single tone siren that only a bat could hear when the wind isn't calm more than a few blocks away.

In the city here I would gladly take the old model 2's and 5's with the downtown t-bolt as a better warning system than the 2001's gleaming on the poles. 2001's indeed is a good siren mechanics wise IMO but the sounds and range they produce leaves much to be desired. IMO FS droped the ball on this. You can't tell me a company as big as FS doesn't know lower tones carry further. Perhaps though selling more sirens to fill the voids is an excellent business model.
