The Whelen in the news story is only a fiew years old, so the only thing that could be Cold War technology on it would be the controls. I'm not sure what that guy was talking about, unless they kept all of the controls for the old system, and are using them for the current one.

The old system was Thunderbolts.

But every new siren has a shiny new control boxes marked Whelen, to go with them.
Now the building where they activate them from could still have the old controls.. but i don't see how, since they went from phone-line control, to narrowband radio control.

Colleyville, Tx had one of their Whelen's go whacko about a week or so ago. It started one night at about 3am going the wailing tone. The next night it was at it again and I went on a hunt found the siren about the same time the Fire Department and EM got there...figured they'd know a bit more than they did.. I had to basically do it for them but it was funny when it was going off all by itself

I think the cold war technology remark was a sweeping generalization about sirens. totally out of place and revealing of the general population's ignorance.
chicks like sirens, too.
