Columbus Ohio T-bolts

Sun Nov 26, 2006 11:58 am

There don't seem to be too many t-bolts left in Columbus. I specifically remember two on the west side - one was at Eureka and Sullivant Aves and the other in a church parking lot on Demorest about halfway between Briggs and Clime Rds.

The siren at Eureka and Sullivant must have been installed between 1971 and 1974, because I lived near Richardson and Sullivant (only two blocks away) from 1969 to 1971 and could never remember hearing the siren go off that close. But by 1974, we had returned to the west side, living on Roys Ave near Mound St (about 11 blocks west) and I clearly remember the siren blaring during the bad tornado outbreak on April 3 that year.

There was once a t-bolt atop a grain elevator near the intersection of Georgesville Rd and Sullivant, but that seems to have rusted away, replaced by a Whelen at the fire station near that corner.

There is what looks to be a small yellow siren atop an old firehouse on West Broad near Cypress, in the Franklinton area. It used to be on the south side of Broad between Dakota and Avondale back in the 70s.

There is a t-bolt in the parking lot of St Christopher Church on Grandview Avenue between 3rd and 5th.

There is also a t-bolt painted gray at the corner of James Rd and Main Street on the east side.

Are there any more t-bolts left in Columbus? I haven't been home in two years - have these been replaced?

Thanks!

Here is a current map of all of Franklin Countys 144 Sirens. The Blue Circles/red dots are the Thunderbolts. The Eureka and Sullivant Ave siren has been replaced as of this year.

I also have a map of Cincinnatti's system if you want it.

Yes, I live very near Cincinnati. I actually have a map of the Hamilton Cty. siren system, but I am currently without a scanner, so blah....

Anyway, I'd like to see it!
If your siren is a-failin'
Chances are that it's a Whelen
And if it's just about to die
Then it must be an ATI

an F'in shame!! All those dots you see on the columbus map use to be Thunderbolts, SD10's and Model 5/7's.... They went and tore down most of them for those piece of crap Whelen speakers over the last 15 years... I have been in Columbus 1,000 times for the Noon test 1 Wed a month. and during tornado warnings.. its not that all impressive, actually totally boring.. those Whelens make me yawn and no one can understand what the voice part is saying.. they suck!

At least Cinncy still has some model 5's and SD10's.. Columbus sucks!

That is a real shame about the Thunderbolt at Sullivant and Eureka. When my family lived on Roys near Mound, we could never hear the Demorest siren - only the Eureka-Sullivant. I have heard those Whelen announcements - they are muffled and totally undecipherable just blocks away, and when you have the weather conditions that cause the warning to be called, you can't hear them at all over the rain, wind and thunder. You could hear a Thunderbolt!

My g/f lives between three sirens and she has told me she has stepped outside when she heard talking and could not make out what was being said.

Unsafe, if you ask me. If the Whelen is now at Belvidere and Sullivant, I know for a fact they can't hear it from Hague Ave on west. Next closest siren is at Hague and Valleyview - way too distant!

There used to be a siren (the one with about eight horns in a circle) near Sullivant and Binns Blvd. There was also one at Orel Ave and West Broad like this - Columbus needs them now!

Sadly, ALL the T-bolts have been replaced by the crappy Whelen 4004s. Columbus Ohio sucks!

Um....so let me get this straight. You just bumped a six year old thread just to disparagingly say something we all already knew (partly because you've made such a huge fuss about it)?!

I need to go weep....just....weep in a corner. Meanwhile, if you want to do well around here, please, for the love of god...contribute wisely.
