Additional Memphis Mobil Directo found

Sun Sep 15, 2013 9:41 pm

As many of you know, Memphis has a Mobil Directo that is still in operation on top of East High School. Some of you may have seen my video of this. There were some people confirming the presence of additional Mobil Directo(s) across the city that were removed, leaving the EHS siren as the only one left.

Today, I was browsing through a Facebook group of Memphis nostalgia and I ran across the picture below, of a gas powered Mobil Directo on top of a fire station at 711 National Avenue in Memphis. This fire station was torn down sometime in the 70s or 80s(?) and I believe that the siren was taken down and now resides on a trailer in the EMA parking lot, the one that I have seen in person. A new fire station, Fire Station #17, was built to replace the old one.

Below is the only picture that I can find of a Memphis gas-powered Mobil Directo (the EHS siren was converted to electric). This was taken in 1965.

It's possible the one in the photo could be the one at the EMA. I suspect it was converted to electric power, like the EHS one.

They had a third Mobil Directo that used to be on top a school. It's now at my house.

Yeah I always thought it was cool that you have one of Memphis' MDs. I have no clue where it was though and the EMA doesn't either.
